Free Movie about PSLE

There are 2 short films on the subject of PSLE, free on YouTube. Quite accurate about the lives of kids in Singapore currently. Do feel free to watch if you are interested.

It is truly a first-world problem (only kids in middle to high income families will suffer from this, as tuition is not cheap), but it does reflect the stress that children go through nowadays.

Look at the child’s timetable: https://youtu.be/FQB7ritn580?t=116. Completely packed from Monday to Sunday. (Quite realistic as I have seen real life examples of such scenarios.)

Mr Lee Tat Wei lives in a four-room flat in Woodlands. He and his older brother went to neighbourhood schools. His father is a taxi driver and his mother works as a part- time sales assistant.

Despite his humble background, the 19-year-old said he has never felt shortchanged. “My parents gave me an environment that money couldn’t buy. They never pressured me to get straight As. They taught me to live in the moment,” said the Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) graduate who had a perfect score of 45 for his International Baccalaureate diploma exams.

Mr Lee, who is one of the five recipients of the President’s Scholarship this year, will be going to read liberal arts at Yale University.

Thanks to all readers of mathtuition88.com, I have received WordAds payout by WordPress.

Mathtuition88.com first joined WordAds in 01-2014, where the payout was quite miserable (less than $1 for 5000 views). The payout has since increased considerably, thanks to higher quality adverts localized in Singapore.

The advertisements shown are quite relevant (usually tuition by top tutors/schools, travel and other deals in Singapore), so do turn off ad-blockers when visiting mathtuition88.com. Thanks once again!

Nanyang Girls NYGH starts school later at 8.15am

Very good idea by NYGH. Sleep is important for students.

SINGAPORE: For almost a year now, Nanyang Girls High (NYGH) students have been starting school at 8.15am – a good 45 minutes later than most secondary schools.

And the results have been telling.

The school in Bukit Timah has been taking part in ground-breaking sleep studies conducted by Duke-NUS Medical School researchers – whose studies have shown that 80 per cent of teens here don’t get enough sleep, which affects their health, grades and cognitive abilities.

It was what the teachers of NYGH had been suspecting all along.

Mrs Ho-Sam Choon Juen, NYGH dean of student systems and info management, said: “For a long time, we’d known that our girls were not sleeping enough because of their academic and extra-curricular demands.

8 JCs to merge (i.e. 4 JCs to close down)

The latest education news in Singapore is that 4 pairs of JCs to merge as student numbers shrink; 14 primary and 6 secondary schools also affected.

The effect on the primary and secondary schools is not that significant, due to the large number of primary and secondary schools. However, there are only around 20 JCs in Singapore, the effect is quite big for JCs.

8 JCs merging is just a nice way of saying 4 JCs to be shut down permanently. RIP Serangoon, Tampines, Innova and Jurong JCs.

The most affected would be O level students in the next 5 years. Yes, there is declining birthrate but that is gradual. So for the next 5 years, there is approximately the same number of students competing for 4 less JCs.

So by “Demand and Supply” logic, we have:
– similar demand for JCs (approx. same number of students in the next 5 years)
– lower supply of JCs (due to the 4 axed JCs)

By Economic Theory: If supply decreases and demand is unchanged, then it leads to a higher equilibrium price.

Hence the logical conclusion is that the “price” will rise, that is, cutoff points for JCs may become lower. To add on to that, the 4 axed JCs cater mainly to the 13-20 pointers. So students falling in that L1R5 range will be especially affected.

GEP Selection Test Review and Experience

The following is a parent’s review and experience of the GEP Selection Test (2016). Original text (in Chinese) at: http://mp.weixin.qq.com/s/xQpLynFWpZ6QNpI_vlw4cw

Interested readers may also want to check out Recommended Books for GEP Selection Test.

Translation:

One day in September 2016 afternoon, read the son of the third son as usual time to go home, after the door looked calmly handed me a letter ~ OMG! A letter from the MOE to inform the son passed the GEP first round Examination, will be held on October 18 to participate in the second round of selection.

The son of the school in Singapore ranked 100 +, the third grade a total of seven classes, a total of about 280 students, he is in the best class. According to him, almost all the classmates participated in the first round of examinations, only through the eight individuals, including him. Later learned that, in fact, the school also 8 individuals to participate in the second round of their selection. Due to the small number of schools will not send people to pick up. Examination place in a subway station, never been to the school. The original quiet life, because to send test and upset, and finally have the opportunity to close feeling the legendary GEP.

A. Parents around the campus export was packed, looking at the eagerly a pair of eyes, I immediately think of China’s college entrance examination. Originally even sent too lazy to send his son to the exam, that is only an examination only, did not expect her husband told me to pick up the road, I began to excitement.

B. Carefully observed the son of the school to take the exam students, are not usually learn top-notch, but not usually take the scholarship. Such as the son of English is poor, but also through the first round.

Further, GEP study focus on learning with the usual very different. Also confirmed the rivers and lakes in the legendary: GEP will try to reduce the impact of language on the selection, so that truly talented children to stand out, and as much as possible without interference. Nevertheless, English is actually bad or affected. I asked the four students, all of the questions are difficult to answer the most difficult IQ, and the son of English that is better than IQ difficult, but there are several IQ questions did not understand, because the word does not know, of. In this case,

C. There are eight children in the class reference, thought that there will be a few other classes, did not think the day before the collection know that their school also their 8 classes. In fact, before the class this year, his son was assigned to other classes of students, there are several aspects of the results are good. Why the last one did not pass the GEP first round?

I think the first is the environment, in improving class, the teacher will be strict a lot of the other classes are not necessarily. Son is after almost a year, only to adapt to such a fast-paced and strict requirements.

Second, the amount of information provided is different. I remember the beginning of the beginning of his son’s class soon, on a large number of additional courses, including Mathematical Olympiad, Science Olympiad, Chinese writing, the second foreign language (Malay), plus a day CCA and school normal plus lesson. . .

Never had a tutorial managed son plus a lesson, home every day at least 4 points, and sometimes 6 points, as well as the violin and Chinese Orchestra, once tired and round and round all day shouting hungry. Home do not want to do anything, followed by his brother to play, to think of homework to do quickly, the next day and get up.

After six months, tired not, but the results plummeted. I have wanted his son not to learn these extra lessons, and his son said that these classes only their classes have, and other classes will not notice the information plus lesson, or learn it!

It now appears that the school had great efforts to catch them this class, the son is still helpful, and sometimes really forced a force, hold on, or there will be harvest. At least the son did not spend extra effort to improve classes, but also an improvement! This also fully shows that folklore, the small three-class is how important and tragic. I also know it!

From the test finished out of the children’s face, you can guess the state of the exam!

D. Elite is the elite schools, such as the son of this little-known school, a school had only a few people in the first round. The elite is the school charter to pick up, as well as teachers to accompany. Because the reference is really many people, a car also sat down, opened a few.

Nanyang Primary School is said to have 120 reference. People usually test and this test is almost, not just like to play like a try test chant. In this case,

E. When the son, met a lot of acquaintances. Parents who have children’s kindergarten students, parents who have attended the parents’ meeting, parents who have written classes, parents who have Chinese orchestra help, parents who have neighbors playmates, friends who have friends with God, and my fellow villagers and husband colleagues Even though the children in different schools, but the emphasis on education, parents, will eventually meet ~ to wait for the child to test this way to meet, quite special.

F. From the parents of the ratio can be inferred: the Chinese to the absolute high rate of reference, a small amount of Indian, a small amount of Malay, did not see Europe and the United States. Chinese like to test, but also good at the test, really reflected most vividly. After my visual, the number of boys more than girls. Take the son school, for example, 8 people have only 1 girl. I guess half of half a far cry. After all, his son son school class first, almost the girls occupied. Impression in the class last year, single scholarship, only the son of a boy.

G. GEP ultimately can be admitted to the rare, most parents are holding try to see the idea of the problem, let the children participate in, do not need all the energy on the GEP, but no need to focus on depletion in the primary three. Son of a classmate did not apply for GEP, heard there are not admitted to the second round, and some even admitted to the elite do not read.

Have seen a documentary article, his children’s classmates, the results are very good score is also high, can enter the first-class university, but eventually chose to read poly, because that read enough, never want to read!

Summary

Although most of the parents of the GEP rush, often the results are unsatisfactory. If the child has the ability to have a high degree of quality into the GEP selected elite, of course, is very good!

But if it is to further test, in order to further fight, one year or even several years earlier to the child overweight, premature energy consumption in reading this matter, the child’s desire to pursue knowledge and innovation, personal opinion, for the long And a variety of life, it is not worth!

I am a student of English in the workplace, said her daughter through the GEP test class children to go, now mixed very general.

Postscript

Participating in GEP is a good experience. No matter what the outcome, are worth a try Oh!

In addition, the son of GEP in the second round of the examination notice, the accident received three years to transfer the success of the phone in the fourth grade to go home only 5 minutes away from the school, and is directly assigned to the best classes to This ended his last three years, 5-15 minutes a day, take a 15-minute bus, but also to go some way to learn the experience.

GEP History

In 1984, the Ministry of Education of Singapore launched the Gifted Class, which aims to foster gifted students and give full play to their talents so as to better serve the community in the future.

The nine schools that provide talent education are: Anglo-Chinese School (Primary), Catholic High School (Primary), Henry Park Primary School, Nan Hua Primary School (Nan Hua Primary School) ), Nanyang Primary School, Raffles Girls’ Primary School, Rosyth School, St. Hilda’s Primary School and Tao Primary School. Nan School).

GEP screening process

All primary school students have the opportunity to participate in the first round of screening tests, voluntary, not mandatory. The first round of screening tests, including English and mathematics, usually in late August each year (the specific test location and time to the Ministry of Education notice).

In the first round, only 5% of students will be selected to participate in the second round of the selection test (usually the examination time in mid-October each year). Usually only 1% of the students will be selected last year, from the fourth grade, more than 9 schools to enter the genius classes.

Genius classes differ from ordinary students in their curricula.

On the basis of the general curriculum, intensive classes will be arranged for the Gifted students to explore and expand the capacity of gifted students to stimulate their more personalized and profound learning.

Kids with tuition fare worse?

Article: http://www.straitstimes.com/opinion/kids-with-tuition-fare-worse

Those who read the news, either online or in print, would probably have seen this article: “Kids with tuition fare worse”.

In the article, it is claimed that: “In fact, children who received tuition actually scored about 0.256 standard deviations lower on their tests than those who did not (standard deviation is a measure of how spread out test scores are from the average).”

The headline is actually quite misleading, causing people to think that tuition causes worse performance. One needs to read the final part of the article: “The first is that students who receive tuition choose to receive it precisely because they are not doing well in school. In other words, weak performance may be what is driving students to enrol for tuition.”

The correct way to measure the effect of tuition is via a “before and after” experiment. Scores of students before and after enrolling in tuition should be compared to truly see if tuition has any effect. Many tuition centers are already doing this, it is not a rocket science experiment.

Without the “before and after” comparison, the research is meaningless. It is like saying, “People who see a medical doctor frequently have poorer health.”, it is true, but obviously one cannot conclude that medical doctors cause poor health!

Lastly, the research is analysing PISA data (Programme for International Student Assessment). Clearly, there is no tuition centre tutoring PISA, which is significantly different from the ordinary curriculum (I was a PISA grader). As tuition is highly specialized, it is true that tuition can have close to zero effect on PISA scores. It is like PSLE / O Level Math tuition has close to no effect on Math Olympiad scores; even if it is both “Math”, it is possible to score full marks in PSLE / O Level Math but zero marks in Olympiad Math!

Singaporean Student Wins US$250K Scholarship

Congratulations to Ms See for the win. The amount of the scholarship is no joke, it is the price of a HDB flat (a home in Singapore).

If you are interested to take part, here are the details: The Breakthrough Junior Challenge is an annual competition for students, ages 13-18, to share their passion for math and science with the world! In partnership with the Khan Academy, each student submits a video that explains a challenging and important concept or theory in mathematics, life sciences, or physics. The winner receives a $250,000 college scholarship. The winning student’s teacher and school also benefit: $50,000 for the teacher and a state-of-the-art $100,000 science lab for the school. Learn more at https://breakthroughjuniorchallenge.org.

AsianScientist (Dec. 6, 2016) – Ms Deanna See, a 17-year-old studying at Raffles Institution in Singapore, was one of two students to win the Breakthrough Junior Challenge, a global science video competition that is part of the 2017 Breakthrough Prizes. See’s fun and quirky five-minute video, titled ‘Superbugs! And Our Race Against Resistance,’ explains the phenomenon of antibiotic resistance with the use of Lego figurines. She takes the viewer through the evolution and genetics behind how superbugs amass their formidable defenses against various antibiotics. Watch See’s video below:

Feng Tianwei wins World No. 1 Ding Ning despite being dropped from Singapore Team

Congratulations to Feng Tianwei for the epic win over World No. 1 Ding Ning in the Chinese Super League, despite being recently axed from the Singapore national team (for unknown reasons).

The Chinese Super League, though not as famous as the Olympics, is obviously much harder and tougher to win than the Olympic Games. The main reason being that the entire platoon of All-Star China Team is playing there, while in the Olympics China is restricted to sending 3 men and 3 women.

So, once again congratulations, and Feng’s perseverance and fighting spirit is very motivating to all.

Top PSLE Score

The top PSLE Score for this year seems to be 286, from RGPS (Raffles Girls Primary School).

Close runners-ups are 283, from NYPS (Nanyang Primary School) and Nanhua.

Source is from https://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/t-scores/, which is self-reported by parents. Casting aside the “troll scores” of 299 or 300 which are not believable, this seems to be the most accurate top PSLE score available, since the mainstream media are not allowed to report them.

Congratulations for those who have done well. And for those who have not, do not be discouraged as there is still a long road ahead, and there will be many opportunities to prove yourself.

For those considering tuition, check out StarTutor, which is highly recommended by us. Tutors are screened for their educational qualifications and matched accordingly, with zero administrative fees.

From experience, O Level is a completely new ball game from PSLE. It is possible for relatively weak students in PSLE  to do very well in O Levels, and also vice versa; for quite strong PSLE students to do poorly in O Levels. It is a new beginning for students.

2017 Update: Highest PSLE score seems to be 285 from Nanyang Primary. The runner-up position seems to be tied with a few schools such as MGS, ACS, Ai Tong, with 281.

Note that neighborhood schools can produce very strong results too: Alexandra Primary School and Admiralty Primary School both produce 280 scorers. In fact I recall from memory that Rulang Primary School used to consistently produce top scorers that can even rival that of Nanyang Primary School.

The Reason Why Singaporean Students are Top in Maths (PISA)

Quite interesting analysis on how and why Singapore topped the ranking for PISA in Math/Science. One possible reason is the difficulty of PSLE trains students to solve tricky and difficult (for that level) math questions. It is well known that PSLE questions are more difficult (for students of their respective levels) than O Level E Maths questions. The peak difficulty in Singapore Maths Syllabus are at PSLE and then at H2 A Level Maths.

Overall, on average, the average Singaporean student is quite well-prepared in maths. Since PISA is measuring the average capability of students (rather than the top echelon of students), it is no surprise that Singapore would score rather highly in this aspect.

Note that China (Mainland) seems to be missing from the study. If China (especially if restricted to cities like Shanghai and Beijing) are included, they would be a strong contender for No. 1 position too, since it is well known that China Math is just as difficult, or even more so, especially at high school/senior high school level.

(Translation: America is also using Singapore Math material to teach their students!)

  • 对知识的掌握能力;
  • 应用能力;

Bullies from St Andrew’s Secondary School

Just to inform parents of this terrible incident that occurred in Saint Andrew’s Secondary School. Apparently, this is not an isolated incident, it is quite an common occurence, it is even stated in Wikipedia: “After a series of bullying cases attracted attention in 2003, the school stated that the situation at St Andrew’s was no worse than at any other school, adding that bullies receive a stern warning; repeat offenders or those who injure others are caned and, ultimately, expelled.”

Do spread this post and comment on the original facebook page (with video): https://www.facebook.com/bhailaminate/videos/10210995333384134/. Parents who are choosing a secondary school for their child should also take note of this incident.

For this kind of extreme case, there is no need for the school to counsel/discipline the bullies anymore, just send them straight to Boys’ Home is the best thing to do.

NTU to open three new alumni houses with free membership for graduates

This is great news for NTU alumni.

(Source: http://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/education/ntu-to-open-three-new-alumni-houses-with-free-membership-for-graduates)

SINGAPORE – Graduates of Nanyang Technological University (NTU) can look forward to free membership at three new alumni houses.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of NTU’s inauguration as a university, and it announced on Wednesday (Aug 10) that it will open a 10,000 sq ft alumni house – equivalent to nine five-room flats – in Marina Square mall in November.

The second facility will be at NTU’s main campus’ North Spine Plaza, and it will open by the end of this year; the third will be at one-north and will open next year.

New PSLE System favors “All Rounders” over “Specialists”

The new PSLE system clearly favors “all-rounders” over “specialists”.

Scenario 1: Math-Whiz VS All-Rounder

Imagine a Math/Science-whiz with

Math:100 (AL 1)
Science: 98 (AL 1)
English: 84 (AL 3)
Chinese: 84 (AL 3)

Total marks: 366   (Approx. 275 T-score)
Total AL: 8

With a “all-rounder”:

Math: 90 (AL 1)
Science: 90 (AL 1)
English: 90 (AL 1)
Chinese: 90 (AL 1)

Total marks: 360 (Approx. 270 T-score)
Total AL: 4

The Math/Science whiz (total AL 8) will be getting double the score of the “all-rounder” (total AL 4), effectively eliminating his chance of entering the top schools. The irony is that the total marks of the Math/Science Whiz is a considerable 6 marks more than the “all-rounder”.

Under the old system, both are likely to get around the same T-score (approx. 270+), with the Math/Science whiz having a higher T-score.

Scenario 2: English-Educated Kid VS All Rounder

This scenario is even worse.

Imagine an intelligent English-Educated Kid (with parents who can’t speak Chinese). After a lot of hard work with Chinese enrichment, etc, he manages to pass Chinese, with a score of:

Math:100 (AL 1)
Science: 98 (AL 1)
English: 95 (AL 1)
Chinese: 64 (AL 6)

Total marks: 357   (Approx. 268 T-score)
Total AL: 9

Under the old system, this child is probably one that qualifies to enter any school, including RI/HCI, etc. His T-score will probably be on par with the All-Rounder at around 270, or at most slightly lower. Under the new system, his total AL is almost 10. Really a big difference.

In fact, the O-Levels, A-Levels are also favoring the all-rounders. Only at university (and beyond), do the specialists finally get a chance to shine. That’s why it is common to see top students in universities who were not previously from the top JCs or secondary schools.

My followup post on Kiasuparents:

My concern as Math educator is that students extremely talented in Mathematics/Science but slightly weak in languages will be disadvantaged in the new PSLE system.

To quote from my own blog entry titled “New PSLE System favors “All Rounders” over “Specialists””:

Imagine a Math/Science-whiz with

Math:100 (AL 1)
Science: 98 (AL 1)
English: 84 (AL 3)
Chinese: 84 (AL 3)

Total marks: 366 (Approx. 275 T-score)
Total AL: 8

Previously such a student’s score is more than sufficient to enter the top schools like RI/HCI. But under the new system, his score of 8, chances of entering the top schools are slim.

It is not about the prestige, but rather the resources and enrichment programmes that top schools provides that other schools may not. Some examples include Olympiad training, Laboratory sessions, etc.

For these kind of students, the PSLE score of 100 is not enough to capture their ability in Math/Science, they would score 150/100 if there is such a thing. Hence, their calibre is well above the “All-Rounders” who score 90 for each subject and get 4 points.

Unfortunately, the new PSLE system does not bode well for these students…

ChiefKiasu’s (founder of Kiasuparents) comments:

This is a good analysis. The new system does demand excellence in every subject, which in my opinion will increase stress more than it reduces. And for those who say that it is good because there is no need to count decimal points, consider the fact that Secondary schools will still have COPs. So it is now getting 4 points vs getting above 255 t-scores. Which measure would you consider to be more narrow?

My feeling is that the new system will actually intensify the cookie-cutter education culture and create more average joes than truly outstanding individuals.

There are two kinds of talented students.

Just read this interesting article. Will the new PSLE system reward students of the first kind or second kind? From my experience as student and tutor, Singapore has many talented students of the first kind, but very few talented students of the second kind.

To be a student of the second kind, one needs to “acquire knowledge beyond the school curriculum”, and “read and look at more advanced material”. Check out this page on Math Olympiad books that are suitable for students of the second kind. Parents should encourage, but never force, children to read more of these kinds of books.

What are the Two Kinds of Talented Students

Source: http://www.math.rutgers.edu/~zeilberg/Opinion0.html

There are two kinds of talented students. One kind is that of “obedient students” that do exactly as ordered by their teachers, and do not attempt to acquire knowledge beyond the school curriculum; learning the material is relatively easy for them, and the pressure from the society, their parents, and their teachers, that tells them that study is the only way to acquire a solid socio-economic status is their only motivation. To that group of students also belong less talented students, that have to study much harder, but the “reward” that awaits them in the future, as well as the immediate rewards promised by the parents (“if you will not fail any subject, you would go to an overseas vacation this summer” etc.) prods them to study.

There is yet another kind of talented students, whose natural curiosity lead them, already from a young age, to read and look at more advanced material, in order to satisfy their natural curiosity.

When such a student enters high school (and in fact, already in the higher grades of elementary school) he sees that the material that he has already studied on his own presented in a different way. The learning is induced through severe disciple (all the system of examinations and grades), and the material is taught the same way as in animal training. The fascinating science of Chemistry turns into a boring list of dry formulas, that he has to learn by heart, and the threats and the incentives practiced in school badly offend him. As though out of spite, he does not listen to the commands of his teachers, but instead studies on his own material that is not included in the curriculum. Obviously, even the most talented student can not learn from just sitting in class, (and even during class he often studies other material), and so starts the “tragedy” described in your article.

Is the highest-ranked school the right one for your child? (Singapore)

Sometimes, the highest-ranked school may not be the right school for every child. This issue is also discussed in Malcolm Gladwell’s book David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants.

Source: http://www.straitstimes.com/opinion/is-the-highest-ranked-school-the-right-one-for-your-child

Q Is the highest-ranked school the right school for my child?

A As a Singaporean economist working on issues in education, I am often asked by parents to recommend the best school for their children. Invariably, what such parents were really asking me was to identify a highly ranked school that their child had a decent chance of getting into.

But this raises a dilemma – is a highly ranked school really the most suitable school for a child?

Adults may recall school environments as idyllic places, but we forget that classrooms have now become arenas where fierce competition takes place among classmates.

In today’s schools, students take part in academic tournaments where better test results, compared to those of their peers, bring greater opportunities for scholarships and allow access to better schools. Those who do not excel in these tournaments may lose their incentive to compete and ultimately drop out of the academic race altogether.

This is where my work provides some guidelines for parents weighing the pros and cons of being in a more competitive school.

Last year, a fellow researcher, Mr Yoshio Kamijo, and I conducted a two-day experiment where we first tested the maths ability of 132 Secondary 2 students in a school in Shandong, China, through maths pre-tests on the first day.

Afterwards, we categorised the performance of our students into four groups, based on those pre-tests: low maths ability, average maths ability, high maths ability and a mixed group with low-, average- and high-ability students in one class.

We were interested in comparing the performance of students in a mixed class with those in a class with similar-ability students.

Our experiment aimed to see how students in each class performed in another maths test given on the second day, under a competitive environment where winners received rewards and losers were given punishments.

The point of the exercise was to investigate whether being grouped with similar- or dissimilar-ability students mattered to students of different abilities.

Just like a scientific experiment, by controlling for their pre-ability, their performance in our competition captured how such students responded to the knowledge of competing against similar or weaker/stronger opponents.

Our final results were not that surprising. We compared the results of students in the mixed class with similar-ability peers.

We found that those in the mixed class had different reactions towards their competitors depending on their ability level: the low-ability students were discouraged and performed poorly, the middle-ability students were more motivated and did better in a mixed class than in a class with similar-ability students, while for the high-ability students, no real difference was seen.

The difference in performance was significant.

Engineering matters for Singapore’s future, says PM Lee Hsien Loong

Source: http://www.straitstimes.com/politics/engineering-key-to-singapores-future-as-smart-nation-pm

Excerpt:

Singapore has boosted its water supply by recycling water and increased its physical size by reclaiming land – all feats of engineers.

Indeed, just as engineering helped transform Singapore into a modern state, it will continue to play a key role as the country strives to be a smart nation and overcome its lack of resources, said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong yesterday.

But it has since become harder to attract top students to study engineering and do engineering jobs, as many opt for the humanities, business and finance, he noted.

Engineering is among the major professions here with the most vacancies in the past few years.

Fresh graduates face challenging job search ahead

SINGAPORE — They’ve sent 20 to 50 job applications but some graduating students are struggling to secure interviews, much less a job offer, amid the Republic’s slowing economy.

With the gross domestic product (GDP) projected to grow 1 to 3 per cent this year — last year’s growth was 2.1 per cent — human resource experts said they have seen a drop of at least 10 per cent in job vacancies open to fresh graduates from last year, with graduates finding it difficult to secure their ideal jobs.

Free Ebook: Singapore’s Scientific Pioneers

Source: http://www.asianscientist.com/pioneers/

The non-commercial book Singapore’s Scientific Pioneers, sponsored by grants from the SG50 Celebration Fund and Nanyang Technological University, is dedicated to all scientists in Singapore, past, present and, most of all, aspiring. Read more from Asian Scientist Magazine at: http://www.asianscientist.com/pioneers/

The free downloadable book also includes a Mathematician from National University of Singapore, Professor Louis Chen, one of the discoverers of the Chen-Stein method.

To download the ebook, click here to download (official mirror).

The Chen-Stein method is part of the branch of Mathematics known as Probability. Advanced probability requires a lot of Measure Theory, another type of Math classified under Analysis.

In the book, Professor Chen mentioned one of his favourite books is “One Two Three . . . Infinity: Facts and Speculations of Science (Dover Books on Mathematics)“.

It turns out that this book is very inspiring, and many reviewers on Amazon said that after they read this book during their childhood, they became inspired to become mathematicians/scientists!

Sample review (from Amazon): “It seems that almost all the reviewers had the same experience: we read this book at an early age, and it was so fascinating, so inspiring, and so magical that it directed us into math and science for the rest of our lives. In my case the book was loaned to me when I was about 12, by my best friend’s father.”

Hence, if you are looking for a Math/Science book for your child, this book may be one of the top choices. 🙂

Singapore Tuition Forum News Compilation

Compilation of Interesting Articles on Tuition

Recently, there have been many news on the Straits Times Forum / other newspapers / internet on the phenomenon of tuition in Singapore. There are many mixed opinions on tuition, which are discussed in depth in those articles. I have picked the most interesting articles on the subject of tuition, which would be a familiar topic in Singapore, as 70% or more of Singaporean students have tuition. The links are found near the bottom of the post.

Personally, I think of tutors like a sports coach, like a swimming coach or a badminton coach. Sports coaches help their students to play the sport better. Tuition teachers help their students to perform in the exams better. There are great similarities between their roles. Currently, almost all top athletes would have a coach, it would be unthinkable for an athlete at the international level not to have a coach.

Tuition has also been around since thousands of years ago. Alexander the Great’s father hired Aristotle as a tutor for his son. The Imperial Tutor in ancient China is an extremely prestigious post and is often awarded only to the top scholar in the imperial exams. His job is to tutor the future emperor or other princes / princesses. (See this example of an Imperial Tutor in China). In the past, only the rich and wealthy could afford tutors. However, due to the prosperity in many first world countries like Singapore and South Korea, affording tuition is becoming increasingly possible even for the middle class.

Note: I am currently not giving tuition at the moment, but I have a good recommendation for a very good tuition agency. Interested readers can email me at mathtuition88@gmail.com.

  10. The Tuition Dilemma (NTU)

As a former tutor, I don’t really think that tuition (in moderation) can be harmful, like what some of the articles claim. Back to the analogy of sports coaches, it is illogical to suppose that a sport student’s badminton skills can worsen and deteriorate after practice with a qualified coach. That would simply make no sense! Similarly, as long as the tutor is competent and not teaching the wrong thing, it would simply be illogical to say that tuition can harm academic performance. It would be really strange if a student becomes worse at math after more practice.

The key to successful life is balance. A role model for children would be Jeremy Lin, the Asian American basketball player. Highly intelligent and an excellent student, he has been admitted and graduated successfully from Harvard. He is also a professional basketball player in the NBA, and at the peak of physical fitness. He is also a humble and devout Christian. He is one guy that all students should take as a role model.

How to Study in Extreme Noisy Environment (+ Math of Decibel System)

The exams are coming, but your neighbor decides to do a major renovation? Neighbor has loud music blasting/ very noisy children? An urgent and drastic measure must be taken, as scientific research has shown that loud background noises reduce children’s test scores!  Recent research in London (UK) has shown that high levels of environmental noise outside schools reduce children’s scores in standardised nationwide academic tests.

This is hardly surprising, as it is very hard to do any studying in the presence of very loud noises. The source of noises, in Singapore context, may come from the following:

  • Neighbor’s heavy renovation (Drilling, Hammering, etc.) Singaporeans are big fans of renovation and like to renovate their houses every couple of years! Unfortunately, as long as the neighbors stay within the guidelines, there is nothing the neighbors, NEA,  or even the police can do anything about it, even if they renovate their house for over a year.
  • Construction Work from building MRT / roads
  • Neighbor’s dog barking
  • Seventh month Getai / Funeral / Wedding
  • Neighbor’s Karaoke / Disco Music
  • Heavy Traffic from Expressway
  • Frequent Airplane Noises (for those living near airport)
  • Noisy children

Since Singapore is an urban and densely populated country, it would be quite common to have one of the above situations which causes noise pollution.

How to Study in Noisy Places

  1. Sun Tzu’s 36th Strategy says, “If all else fails, retreat.” One obvious way is to avoid the source of noise, by studying in the library. However, if one visits the library after 3pm, one will soon realize it is hard to find a study table due to many students also utilizing the library.
  2. A Chinese Proverb says,  “Fight poison with poison”. Blasting loud music in headphones may help in the short term to distract from the noise, but in the long term may obviously cause ear damage since one is adding more noise to the existing noise.
  3. Note that “getting used to noise” is a terrible myth, there is no such thing as getting used to noise. The only reason people seem to “get used to noise” is because they are becoming deaf! (Source: Medscape: It is important to remember to counsel patients that ears do not get used to loud noise. As the League for the Hard of Hearing notes-they get deaf.)
  4. Use Earmuffs / Earplugs to minimize the noise.

Whether the situation calls for a earmuff / earplug would be up to a case by case basis. However, if one is desperately looking for a earmuff / earplug (not easy to find in Singapore shops), the above 3M Peltor earmuffs would do a good job. Do choose a earmuff / earplug with at least 20dB NRR (Noise Reduction Rating). Any lower wouldn’t be of any help at all.

I personally bought the 3M Peltor 98 earmuffs as my neighbor is doing a very prolonged renovation which is estimated to last till the end of this year. Drilling and even a crane was involved. It managed to cut down the noise to a more manageable level.

Pretty Practical Earmuffs

I got them so that I could better focus on work at home – there can be many distracting noises that obstruct serious thought. While they do not cancel everything out – they drastically reduce noise. If someone directly in front of me starts talking to me, I will hear what they are saying, albeit at a reduced noise level. However, when I went into a connected room, and asked my mom and my sister to have a conversation in the room I was initially in, I couldn’t hear what they were saying.

The really bring me a sense of inner peace and centeredness – I can focus on my work without worrying about becoming distracted with random noises in the house. It allows you to get into your own world. I would advise people, however, to notify their house mates when they are going to use them to tune out – it would be horrible if something happened at the other end of the house and one remained unaware because one could not hear the noise.

The Math of Decibel

The decibel is one excellent application of the logarithm.  The formula of the intensity of noise (I) in decibels is:

\boxed{I (dB) = 10\log_{10}\frac{I}{I_0}}, where I_0 is the threshold of hearing, which is the smallest sound a human can hear.

Exams are over! Book disproves evolution using Math!

Finally, after an arduous year, the exams are over (in Singapore). 🙂

It is now time for a period of rest and relaxation, to get ready for 2015, where everything starts again.

Students who are looking for an early headstart (a 1 month headstart is rather valuable) in subjects other than mathematics can check out Startutor: The best tuition agency in Singapore.

Recently, I chanced upon this book:

The Organized Universe: Exclusive Scientific Proof That Darwinism Is a Fraud

What strikes me is that the author is using a Mathematical Law (Benford’s Law) to prove that Darwinism is a fraud. It is pretty unique since other books usually rely on proofs based on physics, biology or chemistry.

The Theory of Darwinian Evolution is a Fraud! Finally, a long awaited secret of the Universe. For the first time, Man has scientific proof showing a pattern to all life. Can this be possible? In this ground breaking first book, veteran researcher and inventor/scientist Karl Dahlstrom and co-author C. Phillip Clegg have written an exceptionally readable, mind expanding and almost equation free account of how an accidental discovery of an obscure mathematical theorem came to overturn an established scientific paradigm. The best theories of the universe are beautiful, simple and profound just as Einstein’s famous formula, E=MC2. This book is elegant in its simplicity and yet complex in its scope of re-defining an ordered universe. This book zeros in on a 150 year old controversy of Darwinian Evolution and tears it apart with laser like precision such that the very core of that ‘theory’ is – to borrow a phrase from Descartes – “rent asunder”. There is nothing new under the sun. Since the Big Bang, an organizing principle of matter, embedded in the natural laws of physics, and eventually life itself, has manifested itself in a precise pattern such that it is found in literally everything – from the composition of meteorites to seawater, soil, and gasses here on earth as well as in tabulated data on everything from stock prices to river lengths. This discovery, called Benford’s Law, simply states that in any tabulated data set of natural numbers, the frequency of occurrence of the digits 1 through 9, as the first significant digit, will conform to a set pattern: 1 will occur 30.x% of the time; “2” will occur 17.x%, etc. with the frequency of each succeeding number being less than the preceding number. What does this scientific law of nature have to do with Darwin’s Evolution Theory?

I have read the preview on Amazon and it seems pretty interesting. 🙂

Also, just a reminder that the Free Career Analysis Quiz by renowned survey company Universum is still active for a limited time only! Do check it out before it ends.

Meaningful learning VS rote learning (Featured Post)

This is a featured post by Epigami (a tuition agency).

Source: http://www.epigami.sg/blog/dont-just-learn-understand/

In the last decade, the Singapore educational system has become a global leader in the education field, helping exemplary pupils to be accepted in the worlds best universities. But with the increasing competitiveness of those top tier universities, students are faced with mounting pressure to excel in every aspect which might have an impact on their exams. This has led to the mass implementation of ‘rote learning’ in Asia, where students focus more on memorising knowledge than the full comprehension of the concepts behind it.

What is ‘rote learning’ and what’s wrong with it?

From the earliest days of schooling, rote learning is an essential tool to efficiently memorize educational fundamentals.  It is a knowledge acquisition process based on repetition. Simply put, make a child say the alphabet every day for 6 months, and they will remember it ‘forever’. This is of course the most obvious way of learning and no other method could be better suited for the developing mind of an infant, as the concepts taught are simple in nature, and do not require a broader knowledge base.

Though, as one progresses through the ranks and gets shifted through the numerous streams put into place by the MOE, new knowledge starts to build upon old concepts, some aspects converging, others diverging, and all of if defining a complex web of knowledge which requires the student to delve into a deeper state understanding if he is to find any further use to it.

How many of us wonder at one point or another: Why am I learning this?

How to save money as a student

How to save money as a student

Education post: What tips/frugal tips would you give to an international student moving to Singapore?

Source: http://www.quora.com/Singapore/What-tips-frugal-tips-would-you-give-to-an-international-student-moving-to-Singapore

As an international student, I assume your lodgings are taken care of, hence the bulk of your money will go to food and entertainment.

1. Eat at the university as much as possible

2. Eat at kopitiams rather than restaurants- and gives you a sense of the ‘authentic Singapore’, as it were.

3. Get this card. It gives you a 10% discount at every Kopitiam (the chain, not the general type of coffee shop). You can get back the deposit later.

4. Get second-hand textbooks. Sometimes, they have sales in the canteen. I got my marketing textbook for $5, and my biochemistry one for $20. Campbell and Reece went for $21. Genetics was $20, too, down from the original prices of $45-80.

5. Or don’t get textbooks at all. Go to the library.

Singapore International School popular among Asian celebrities

Singapore International School popular among Asian celebs, Hong Kongers

Source: http://sg.news.yahoo.com/singapore-international-school-popular-among-asian-celebs–hong-kongers-023523503.html

In recent years, many Asian celebrities have relocated to Singapore, citing its lack of paparazzi culture and social stability.

For some of these stars who are also parents, Singapore’s world-class education system was also an important factor in making the move.

For example, Chinese action star Jet Li, who is also a Singapore citizen, has once said that he moved here for his children to get a good bilingual education with equal emphasis on English and Chinese.

While Hong Kong actress Cecilia Cheung, who relocated to Singapore last year, has sent her two sons to an international school in Singapore, she also sang praises of the country’s education system.

Rumour has it that Hong Kong actor Francis Ng, who has a Singaporean wife, also intends to send his son to a local school in Singapore.

The ideal Singapore JC subject combination for applying to Medicine

Why Additional Maths (A Maths) is important for entering Medicine:

Pathway: A Maths (O Level) –> H2 Maths (A Level) –> NUS Medicine

Source: http://sgforums.com/forums/2297/topics/439605

Quote: While NUS and NTU Medicine does not (officially) require H2 Maths (ie. ‘A’ level Maths), some other (overseas) Medical schools might. And not having H2 Maths might (unofficially) disadvantage your chances, even for NUS and NTU.

Therefore (assuming you intend to fight all the way for your ambition), your safest bet would be to (fight for the opportunity) to take both H2 Bio and H2 Math. The ideal Singapore JC subject combination for applying to Medicine (in any University) is :

H2 Chemistry, H2 Biology, H2 Mathematics

Source: http://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=12228

Quote: pre-requisites for nus medicine will be H2 Chem and H2 bio or physics.

as for what’s best,
H2 math is almost a must since without it you’ll be ruling out a lot of ‘back-up courses’

Singapore O Level Group Tuition Bishan

O Level E Maths and A Maths Tuition starting next year at Bishan ————————– View Mr Wu’s GEP Testimonial at https://mathtuition88.com/group-tuition/

Despite being in the Gifted Education Programme (GEP), Mr Wu is just an ordinary Singaporean. His secret to academic success is hard work and the Maths Techniques he has discovered by himself while navigating through the education system.

He would like to teach these techniques to students, hence choosing to become a full-time Mathematics tutor. Mr Wu has developed his own methods to check the answer, remember formulas (with understanding), which has helped a lot of students. Many Math questions can be checked easily, leading to the student being 100% confident of his or her answer even before the teacher marks his answer, and reducing the rates of careless mistakes.

Mr Wu’s friendly and humble nature makes him well-liked by students. Many of his students actually request for tuition by themselves! (not the parents) His students also look forward to tuition, instead of dreading tuition.

O Level E Maths and A Maths Tuition starting next year at Bishan, the best location in Central Singapore.

Singapore math

Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singapore_math

Singapore math (or Singapore maths in British English[1]) is a teaching method based on the national math curriculum used for kindergarten through sixth grade in Singapore.[2][3] It involves teaching students to learn and master fewer mathematical concepts at greater detail as well as having them learn these concepts using a three-step learning process.[2][3] The three steps are concrete, pictorial, and abstract. In the concrete step, students engage in hands-on learning experiences using concrete objects such as chips, dice, or paper clips.[4] This is followed by drawing pictorial representations of mathematical concepts. Students then solve mathematical problems in an abstract way by using numbers and symbols.[5]

The development of Singapore math began in the 1980s when the country’s Ministry of Education developed its own mathematics textbooks that focused on problem solving and heuristic model drawing.[3][6] Outside Singapore, these textbooks were adopted by several schools in the the United States (U.S.) and in other countries such as Canada, Israel, and the United Kingdom.[7][1][8] Early adopters of these textbooks in the U.S. included parents interested in homeschooling as well as a limited number of schools.[3] These textbooks became more popular since the release of scores from the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), which showed Singapore at the top of the world three times in fourth and eighth grade mathematics.[9] U.S. editions of these textbooks have since been adopted by a large number of school districts as well as charter and private schools.[3]

The bar model can be drawn as a comparison model to compare two bars of unequal lengths, which can then be used to solve a subtraction problem.

Math is at the heart of physics. (O Level Maths and Physics Tips)

Source: http://www.academictips.org/acad/physic/physics_study_skills.html

Studying and practising Mathematics is one of the most useful things an O level student can do.

Not only are the two Maths (E Maths and A Maths) highly intertwined, studying Maths can actually help the students’ Physics too. There are some topics like Vectors and Kinematics in Physics that are also present in Mathematics.

Math is at the heart of physics. So the better your math, the better you’ll do in physics.

A good working knowledge of algebra and trigonometry is needed for Physics.

Why are China students so good at Math & Sciences?

Source: http://sgforums.com/forums/8/topics/475066

Quote:

I’m sure many secondary school/Junior College students have know some China scholars in your schools scoring results that are seemingly impossible to reach (90+ for H2 Maths etc.) But when asked what’s their secret to scoring so well, they said they just study & memorize the same way any other student would do before exams.

I heard from my seniors that China scholars usually study till 2 am every night, but I don’t buy into that. I think they’re just exaggerated rumors to explain their excellent grades. Some of my friends say that China’s education gave them really solid foundation, such that they can grasp concepts much faster than the rest.

Anybody know their secret to doing so well?

Read more at http://sgforums.com/forums/8/topics/475066

It seems like the secret of the China scholars is “practice makes perfect”!
