NIO ES8 Aluminium: Li Bin’s Genius Aluminum Strategy (no other country can copy NIO!)

Summary: There are only 3 countries in the world that can make more than 10 million all-aluminum Electric Vehicles per year.  NIO happens to be in one of them that can make 100 million per year, and Li Bin has taken full advantage of this fact. No other country can copy NIO at a large scale since there is simply not enough aluminum (unless heavy imports are done which will further drive up the price of aluminum).

Two of the above 3 countries have to use up their entire aluminum production to achieve 10 million all-aluminum cars, which is not practical since there are other important uses for aluminum besides cars.

NIO ES8 Aluminium

NIO’s CEO Li Bin has made the genius decision for the NIO ES8 to be completely aluminum, or to be precise, the ES8 uses 96.4% aluminum, the highest percentage of aluminum used in an all-aluminum body in mass production worldwide.

The clear benefit of aluminum over steel is that it is lighter. The NIO ES8 uses an all-aluminum frame, which is about 40% lighter than traditional steel bodies (density of steel 7.8 g/cm3> aluminum 2.7 g/cm3).

With a lighter body, an all-aluminum car would be able to travel further than a steel car per unit of battery power. It is very clear that an all-aluminum car is superior to a steel car.

The NIO ES8’s body-in-white weight is 13.6% of the total vehicle weight, which is 2460 kg. That means, the weight of aluminum in one NIO ES8 car is  approximately 13.6%x2460 = 335 kg.

The genius of Li Bin’s strategy is that no country can copy this all-aluminum strategy on a large scale, as shown in the calculations below. To further add to this, Li Bin must have thought and planned for this very early, well before the factory of ES8 was built.

How many All-Aluminum Cars can each Country make per year

The yearly aluminum production of each country is taken from Wikipedia: List of countries by primary aluminium production.

China produces 36,000,000,000 kg of aluminum in a year. Since one NIO ES8 contains 335 kg of aluminum, that means that:

China can make 36,000,000,000/335 = 107 million aluminum cars per year

Similar calculation for India, India produces 3,700,000,000 kg of aluminum in a year. Since one NIO ES8 contains 335 kg of aluminum, that means that:

India can make 3,700,000,000/335 = 11 million aluminum cars per year

We do the other calculations in the table below. Note that India and Russia have to use up 100% of their aluminum in order to exceed the 10 million aluminum cars target per year. Other countries cannot make more than 10 million all-aluminum cars even if they use up all their aluminum production.

Rank Country/Region Aluminium Production (thousands of metric tons) No. of Aluminum Cars per Year (millions)
1 China 36,000 107
2  India 3,700 11
3  Russia 3,600 11
4  Canada 2,900 9
5  United Arab Emirates 2,700 8
6  Australia 1,600 5
7  Bahrain 1,400 4
8  Norway 1,300 4
9  United States 1,100 3
10  Saudi Arabia 932 3
Number of all-aluminum cars each country can make at the maximum (per year).

NIO Car Battery Swap Videos

Interesting real life video of NIO car battery swap. Interestingly, the NIO car BaaS battery swap center in Shanghai is right next to its competitor Tesla’s Supercharger! The battery swap section is right at 8:55.

The above YouTube channel is a reliable and unbiased one, not set up specifically to promote NIO. It has been around for years, showing how the channel’s owners who are just in their 40s “retire” in Malaysia. They are currently back in Shanghai, not sure if it is permanent or just temporary to avoid the COVID situation in Malaysia.

By the way, in the video, the people are discussing how a house in Shanghai costing 6 million RMB (or almost 1 million USD) is “cheap”! This shows how rich the people in Tier 1 cities in China are, buying an electric car is no big deal for them, as long as the quality is good.

The video above is another authentic video from a real life NIO owner, performing battery swap in another Tier 1 city in China, Shenzhen. The entire battery swap process takes around 4.5 minutes, provided there is no long queue. This is just as fast or even faster than refilling petrol.

Battery swap can be considered as a moat of the company NIO. It is not easy for other car companies to suddenly switch to battery swapping since that would involve significantly redesigning their car or factory.

NIO cars can also charge the battery the conventional way, in addition to battery swapping. Another advantage of battery swapping is that older NIO car models can easily “upgrade” to a newer battery, for example from 70 kWh to 100 kWh.

Check out NIO’s CEO Li Bin launching the new 100 kWh battery in the video below, just recently in November 2020. The 100 kWh battery is on par with Tesla’s Model S.

Rhodeus bitterling fish

I have never seen this fish before in Singapore. In China, it seems common. It is called “Pang Pi” fish, or Rhodeus /bitterling fish. Although it is not very colorful, it is quite unique due to its relationship to the clam.

As you can see from the video, it likes to hang around the clam/mussel, and it will even lay its eggs inside. Apparently, the clam also deposits its eggs on the “Pang Pi” fish.

Clams are hard to keep, and can be quite tricky for beginners. It is hard to tell if the clam has died or not. (Even an alive clam does not move much. You can see how it moves in the video.) Once the clam has died, it will start decomposing and producing toxins which may harm the entire tank. Also, it is quite common for clams to have parasites and worms in them.

In the northern darkness there is a fish and his name is K’un.

Just realized that there is some parallel between the Chinese Giant Fish Kun (鲲) and the Jewish Giant Fish Leviathan.

Similarly, Chinese Giant Bird Peng (鹏) = Jewish Giant Bird Ziz.

In the northern darkness there is a fish and his name is K’un. The K’un is so huge I don’t know how many thousand li he measures. He changes and becomes a bird whose name is P’eng. The back of the P’eng measures I don’t know how many thousand li across and, when he rises up and flies off, his wings are like clouds all over the sky. When the sea begins to move, this bird sets off for the southern darkness, which is the Lake of Heaven.

Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peng_(mythology)

As Leviathan is the king of fishes, so the Ziz is appointed to rule over the birds. His name comes from the variety of tastes his flesh has; it tastes like this, zeh, and like that, zeh. The Ziz is as monstrous of size as Leviathan himself. His ankles rest on the earth, and his head reaches to the very sky.

English version: The Complete Guide to VPN in China

  • WordPress.com、Blogger.comなど、ほとんどのブログサイト。
  • Dropbox

Windscribe Free VPN

  • WordPress.com, Blogger.com을 포함한 대부분의 블로그 사이트.
  • Dropbox

Windscribe.

(He intentado esto antes).

Tarjeta SIM Hong Kong-Macao

Gmail,YouTube,Facebook,WhatsApp

  • Google
  • 大多数博客网站,包括WordPress.com,Blogger.com。 这不仅包括登录页面,还包括WordPress.com,Blogger.com等创建的所有网站。

Complete Guide to VPN in China

How to Access Gmail, YouTube, Facebook, WhatsApp in China

It is well-known that several essential websites are blocked in China:

  • The entire Google suite of products. This includes Gmail, Google search, YouTube, Google Drive, Google Scholar, etc.
  • The entire Facebook suite of products. This also includes WhatsApp since it is owned by Facebook.
  • Most other “Western” social media, such as Twitter.
  • Most blogging sites, including WordPress.com, Blogger.com. This includes not only the login pages but also all sites created by WordPress.com, Blogger.com, etc.
  • Most file-sharing sites, such as Dropbox.
  • Wikipedia

As you can see, the Great Firewall of China blocks many essential services that will inconvenience most people, whether you are a businessman, student, or just a casual tourist. It has worsened in recent years (2019 onwards) as the Firewall has gotten much stronger and many VPNs do not work as well as they did.

In this comprehensive guide, we will cover a variety of options (VPNs and more) that will help you bypass the Great Firewall of China, and connect to Google, YouTube, Facebook, et cetera. We include Free as well as Paid services, as well as non-VPN solutions.

***Very Important: All the VPNs be it free or paid must be downloaded and set up before you enter China. Once you enter China, you may not be able to download or set up an account on the VPN.

Free VPNs

Most websites do not tell you about Free VPNs as they gain no benefit (commission) from doing so. We will only recommend trusted, reliable free VPNs here. Do note that there exists some shady “free” VPNs that have the potential to steal or leak your data. The below Free VPNs do not require any credit card data.

***Important: If you are only relying on Free VPNs, it is recommended to download and set up 2 or 3 alternatives. This is because Free VPNs are usually less stable and more prone to be blocked as there are fewer server locations.

Windscribe Free VPN Review

A very decent Free VPN that is from a actual professional company. You get around 10 GB free data bandwidth that resets each month, with potential to get more by tweeting or referring to your friends.

Windscribe 10 GB free with potential to get more just by Tweeting on Twitter.

I have personally tried the Free version of Windscribe in different cities in China, and it works (most of the time). Do not expect perfect connection though. If you decide to go with Free Windscribe, sign up here at the official Windscribe website.

TunnelBear Free Review

TunnelBear also provides a free plan (500 MB monthly) that does not require any credit card info from you. Based on my experience, Windscribe Free is better than TunnelBear free (based on chance of connection, and number of server locations). However, that being said, it can very well occur that at any given time, TunnelBear can connect while Windscribe cannot. Hence, the recommendation is to get both Free Windscribe and TunnelBear.

Lantern VPN Free Review

Lantern VPN is unique in the sense that it is not a VPN, but rather a “peer network sharing” tool. Since it works differently from a VPN, it could be the case that it is not blocked while other VPNs are. Lantern has a Free option (URL: https://getlantern.org/) which allows you to browse restricted websites while in China.

If you decide to upgrade to the paid version (Lantern Pro), you get more data and faster speed. Use my code YJVD2WT and get 3 months free when you sign up!

Conclusion for Free VPNs

It cannot be overemphasized that you need more than 1 choice if you are going the Free VPN route. It is highly recommended that you download and setup all of the above 3 Free VPNs before stepping foot into China.

Paid VPNs

Paid VPNs (翻墙软件 in Chinese) refer to those that require a monthly (or yearly) subscription fee. What many sites don’t tell you is that even Paid VPNs do not work 100%. Typically the VPNs are in an arms race with the Great Firewall. Once the Firewall makes an algorithm update to block the VPN, the VPN will engage in a time scramble to unblock itself. During that time, the VPN will not be accessible to the public. That being said, paid VPNs have more server options so it is more likely that it can successfully connect to one of those servers, compared to free VPNs which typically only have a few server locations.

PureVPN Review

PureVPN is our top choice for Paid VPNs due to its affordability and its track record.

PureVPN has a special “Optimized for China” set of servers, which allow users to bypass the Great Firewall of China effectively and automatically. In the event of intense blocking by the Firewall, just contact the PureVPN support which is very responsive. They will then direct you to adhoc manual steps to connect to a server, while they fix their main app. (I have tried this before.)

Sign up for PureVPN using this official PureVPN link.

Promotion: Use the coupon code: discount10 for an extra 10% discount on PureVPN subscription.

NordVPN Review

NordVPN is consistently ranked top among all VPNs online. NordVPN is based in Panama which has no mandatory data retention law so they absolutely do not store logs.

NordVPN also has the ““obfuscated servers” function which disguises a user’s traffic to better avoid it being detected by the Firewall.

Sign up for NordVPN using this official NordVPN link.

Conclusion for Paid VPNs

Many sites don’t tell you this, but in 2019 even Paid VPNs do not work 100% in China. Also it depends on the city, sometimes it works in Beijing but not Shanghai and vice versa. Good VPNs like the above work constantly to update their algorithm to minimize the downtime. You would still definitely want to supplement your Paid VPN with 1 or 2 Free VPNs to serve as backup.

Hong Kong-Macau SIM Card

The foolproof method of bypassing the Great Firewall of China is to use a Hong Kong-Macau SIM card. This is because even though Hongkong and Macau are part of China, there is no Firewall there under the “One Country, Two Systems” law. In summary, you will definitely be able to access Facebook, WhatsApp, Google using this SIM card.

This is an excellent option if you are a light to moderate internet user (the SIM card has a fast data limit of 6 GB, after which you still have data but the speed is reduced to 128kbps).

Tip: You should purchase the SIM card from China Unicom as it is one of the largest and most reliable telecommunications company in China.

China Education Documentary

Similar to Singapore, China has different tiers of universities. The top tier in China is Tier 1 (一本). Within Tier 1, there is a further differentiation of “Project 985” and “Project 211” universities, the former being more selective. That is, Project 985 universities is a subset of Project 211 universities.  “Project 985” universities consists of 39 top universities, including Peking University and Tsinghua University.

The above documentary exposes some fraudulent private universities that are out to con money from simple, rural folk. It also shows the hardship experienced by the young people in China, where salaries are low but living expenses can be quite high.

Summary from IMDB:

In ancient times in China, education was the only way out of poverty; in recent times it has been the best way. China’s economic boom and talk of the merits of hard work have created an expectation that to study is to escape poverty. Many Chinese parents see getting a degree as a way of ensuring their children have better, less impoverished lives than their own. But in 1997, the Chinese government privatized universities and education became a commodity. It’s a money-making business where there’s a profit to be made – The University Entrance Exams Day – the day students receive their results – often determines the future of one’s whole life. If you get good results, you get into the state-subsidized universities. If you don’t, there are other universities you can get into but they are more costly, often substandard, and run as lucrative businesses. Some unscrupulous colleges employ marketing techniques to target poor, rural families who are often less streetwise to their tactics. More often than not, these families can’t afford the tuition fees and some end up selling livestock and even their homes to cover the cost of their child’s education. But many colleges can’t live up to their promises and each year, more than two million graduates in China do not find work. For students and families who incurred debt while studying, education is no longer a way out of poverty but a cause of it along with unemployment and despair.

Alibaba launches scholarship programme in S’pore with generous funding

Source: Today Online

Alibaba has partnered with NTU to launch a scholarship program on computer science topics like artificial intelligence, data analytics and cloud computing.

The scholarship funding is very generous: monthly salary of 5,000 SGD for 4 years, with other benefits like CPF, insurance, etc. This is at least 40-50% more than most PhD scholarships in Singapore. Each PhD candidate will also have the opportunity to be mentored by at least one supervisor from his/her enrolled university and one co-supervisor from Alibaba.

It sounds like a very good opportunity for those interested in IT. Hopefully Alibaba will set up more of such facilities and programs in the future.

The official application page and other details can be found on the NTU webpage: http://www.ntu.edu.sg/alibaba-NTU/PhD-application/Pages/index.aspx.

Where to buy dumplings (饺子) in Singapore

Dumplings (饺子) is a staple food in Northern China. However it is rare to find it in Singapore. Often in NTUC Fairprice, or other supermarkets, Gyoza (Japanese Dumplings) or Korean dumplings can be found, but not Chinese dumplings. Making your own dumplings is possible, but very time consuming.

Recently I found out about “Yongle Kitchen”, which sells authentic Shandong style dumplings. Check out their video below, it looks very professional.

The recommended way to buy their dumplings is through Qoo10Click here to enter their Qoo10 Official Shop!

Source: http://news.sina.com.cn/s/2015-02-08/031931495241.shtml

The Dangerous Math of Chinese Island Disputes

Source: http://www.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424052970203922804578082371509569896

China’s standoff with Japan over the rocky Senkaku (Diaoyu) Islands has entered its second month. The current confrontation, however, is more dangerous than is commonly believed. China’s past behavior in other territorial disputes demonstrates why the Senkaku standoff is primed to explode.

Since 1949, China has been involved in 23 territorial disputes with its neighbors on land and at sea. Seventeen of them have been settled, usually through compromise agreements. Nevertheless, China has used force, often more than once, in six of these disputes. And it’s these cases that most closely parallel the Senkaku impasse.

To start, China has usually only used force in territorial disputes with its most militarily capable neighbors. These include wars or major clashes with India, Russia and Vietnam (several times), as well as crises involving Taiwan. These states have had the greatest ability to check China’s territorial ambitions. In disputes with weaker states, such as Mongolia or Nepal, Beijing has eschewed force because it could negotiate from a position of strength. Japan is now China’s most powerful maritime neighbor, with a modern navy and a large coast guard.

Shanghai teens top international education ranking, OECD says

By Sophie Brown, CNN
December 3, 2013 — Updated 2051 GMT (0451 HKT)

(CNN) — When it comes to mathematics, reading and science, young people in Shanghai are the best in the world, according to a global education survey released Tuesday.

In all three subjects, Shanghai students demonstrated knowledge and skills equivalent to at least one additional year of schooling than their peers in countries like the United States, Germany and the United Kingdom.

In math, Shanghai had the highest score with 613 points — the equivalent of nearly three years of schooling above the average for the 34 OECD member countries of 494, and six years above Peru which ranked last with a score of 368. The city also came top in 2009 rankings.

Singapore came second in mathematics with a score of 573, followed by Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, and Macau.

U.S. lags

The United States ranked 36th, performing below the OECD average in mathematics with 481 points, and a score indistinguishable from the average for reading and science.

Part of the reason pupils do so well in Shanghai, according to the OECD’s deputy director of education, Andreas Schleicher, is that they have the drive and confidence to fulfill their potential.

“In China and Shanghai, you have nine out of ten students telling you, ‘It depends on me. If I invest the effort, my teachers are going to help me to be successful’,” Schleicher told CNN’s On China program, which will air later this month.

Why are China students so good at Math & Sciences?

Source: http://sgforums.com/forums/8/topics/475066

Quote:

I’m sure many secondary school/Junior College students have know some China scholars in your schools scoring results that are seemingly impossible to reach (90+ for H2 Maths etc.) But when asked what’s their secret to scoring so well, they said they just study & memorize the same way any other student would do before exams.

I heard from my seniors that China scholars usually study till 2 am every night, but I don’t buy into that. I think they’re just exaggerated rumors to explain their excellent grades. Some of my friends say that China’s education gave them really solid foundation, such that they can grasp concepts much faster than the rest.

Anybody know their secret to doing so well?

Math, Science, Reading Scores Show U.S. Schools Slipping Behind

Posted: December 10, 2010 PRINTER FRIENDLY VERSION: PDF

The United States received a stark wake-up call this week with the release of international test results showing students in other countries are surpassing American students when it comes to math, science and reading. China and Australia outperformed the U.S. in each of the three subject areas tested.

The results of a major international education assessment show that American students are lagging behind many other countries in crucial skills like reading, math and science.

“The United States came in 23rd or 24th in most subjects. We can quibble, or we can face the brutal truth that we’re being out-educated,” said U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan.

Test compares U.S. to other countries

The PISA tests how advanced students are in science, math and reading compared to their peers around the world.

The test, known as the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), directly assesses how prepared teenagers are in math, science and reading compared to their peers in other countries.
The test is translated into each country’s language, and officials from the participating countries are able to review questions before students take the exam to make sure each test is fair and unbiased.

In the U.S., the participating schools and students are randomly selected. On average, about 4,500 students are tested in each of the participating countries.

China and Finland lead the way

Chinese and Finnish students scored highest on the PISA test.

Each PISA subject area is scored on a scale where 500 points is the average. The results announced this week show many countries outperforming the U.S. Here’s a sample:

Math: China 600, Germany 513, United States 487 (31st place)

Reading: China 556, Korea 539, United States 500 (17th place)

Science: China 575, Finland 554, United States 502 (23rd place)

The results of a major international education assessment show that  American students are lagging behind many other countries in crucial skills like reading, math and science.

In China, all parents know that maths is the number one subject in schools

Source: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/maths-reform/9338540/Numeracy-Campaign-What-we-can-learn-from-China.html

‘Above all, it is a cultural thing.” Professor Lianghuo Fan is reflecting on the differences he has noticed between maths education in China and Singapore, where he lived and taught for 40 years, and in Britain, where he is now based. “In China, all parents know that maths is the number one subject in schools, and they expect that in a modern society everyone must be comfortable with maths, even if that means they have to work hard at it.“That attitude is passed on to their children. But here in Britain, you can feel students’ attitude about mathematics is different. They feel all right if they say they don’t like mathematics.”

Professor Fan is not alone in highlighting this national phobia of ours about maths. The government has this week shown itself determined to tackle the problem head on with the unveiling of a new “back-to-basics” primary school maths curriculum, with a renewed emphasis on times-tables, mental arithmetic, fractions and rote learning.

Most people over 40 will see the proposals as a return to the classroom practice of their childhood – but in its introductory remarks the Department for Education claimed inspiration from Asian model that Professor Fan knows so well: “I never heard a child in China or Singapore say that they don’t like maths’,” he stresses, “without a sense of embarrassment.”

We are sitting in a café near Southampton University – where 50-year-old Professor Fan has been head of the Mathematics and Science Education Research Centre since 2010 – as we try to decide if anything lies behind the popular stereotype that Asian children are “naturally” better at maths than those in the West. It is, for example, in the core storyline of Safe, the recent Hollywood blockbuster, starring Jason Statham. An 11-year-old girl, Mei (played by Chinese-born actress Catherine Chan), is a maths prodigy who can decode number sequences at a glance – and therefore has to be protected from the baddies.

Make Britain Count: ‘Stop telling children maths isn’t for them’

Source: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/maths-reform/9621100/Make-Britain-Count-Stop-telling-children-maths-isnt-for-them.html

“The title comes from the central argument of the book,” says Birmingham-raised
Boaler, “namely the idea that maths is a gift that some have and some don’t.
That’s the elephant in the classroom. And I want to banish it. I believe
passionately that everybody can be good at maths. But you don’t have to take my word for it. Studies of the brain show that all kids can do well at maths,
unless they have some specific learning difficulty.”

But what about those booming Asian economies, with their ready flow of mathematically able graduates? “There are a lot of misconceptions about the methods that are used in China, Japan and Korea,” replies Boaler. “Their way of teaching maths is much more conceptual than it is in England. If you look at the textbooks they use, they are tiny.”

Professor Boaler’s tips on how parents can help Make Britain Count.

1 Encourage children to play maths puzzles and games at home. Anything with a dice will help them enjoy maths and develop numeracy and logic skills.

2 Never tell children they are wrong when they are working on maths problems. There is always some logic to what they are doing. So if your child multiplies three by four and gets seven, try: “Oh I see what you are thinking, you are using what you know about addition to add three and four. When we multiply we have four groups of three…”

3 Maths is not about speed. In younger years, forcing kids to work fast on maths is the best way to start maths anxiety, especially among girls.

4 Don’t tell your children you were bad at maths at school. Or that you disliked it. This is especially important if you are a mother.

5 Encourage number sense. What separates high and low achievers in primary school is number sense.

6 Encourage a “growth mindset” – the idea that ability changes as you work more and learn more.
