Logic puzzle: Which octopus is telling the truth?

Source: http://math.stackexchange.com/questions/677495/logic-puzzle-which-octopus-is-telling-the-truth?newsletter=1&nlcode=97485%7cd140

King Octopus has servants with six, seven, or eight legs. The servants with seven legs always lie, but the servants with either six or eight legs always tell the truth.

One day, four servants met. The blue one says, “Altogether, we have 28 legs.” The green one says, “Altogether, we have 27 legs.” The yellow one says, “Altogether, we have 26 legs.” The red one says, “Altogether, we have 25 legs.”

What is the colour of the servant who tells the truth?

Snooze button good or bad? (Education, Productivity Tip)

The snooze button – one of life’s luxuries. But is it really helping you out, or making you more tired?

sin(180-x)

Trigonometry Identities

all science teachers crazy maths tuition

Negative angles:

  • \sin (-x)=-\sin x
  • \boxed{\cos (-x)=\cos x}        (Still Positive!)
  • \tan (-x)=-\tan x

Reason: -x is in the “C” quadrant so Cosine is still positive.

Supplementary angles:

  • \boxed{\sin (180^\circ -x)=\sin x}        (Still positive!)
  • \cos (180^\circ -x)=-\cos x
  • \tan (180^\circ -x)=-\tan x

Reason: 180^\circ -x is in the “S” quadrant so Sine is still positive.

Complementary angles:

  • \sin (90^\circ -x)=\cos x
  • \cos (90^\circ -x)=\sin x
  • \tan (90^\circ -x)=\cot x

Reason: right angled triangle 90-x

  • \sin (90^\circ -x)=\cos x=a/c
  • \cos (90^\circ -x)=\sin x=b/c
  • \tan (90^\circ -x)=\cot x=a/b

What to do if your child is addicted to computer games

Just to share an interesting article on Computer Games addiction, a relevant article in today’s society. Like cigarettes, video games can cause rapid brain dopamine release. How Computer Games affects studies is twofold: Firstly, an hour spent playing computer games means an hour less devoted to studies. Secondly, the rapid dopamine release from computer games desensitises dopamine receptors in the brain, making everyday activities like studying and even eating less enjoyable. Personally, I have played games like DOTA, League of Legends, Warcraft, Maplestory in the past, hence I have experienced the addictive effects of computer games. An advice would be to replace the time playing computer games with other more healthy hobbies like exercise, reading, or even taking a nap would be better for the health.

By Dr. Brent Conrad – Author of “How to Help Children Addicted to Video Games – A Guide for Parents” (instantly download today and get free email support)

Today, almost all children play video games in one form of another (91% to be exact in this particular study). These games are played on computers, game consoles, cell phones, and handheld devices. Everywhere you find children you will also find computer games, and the fascination with electronic entertainments are almost as popular with girls as compared to boys.

Although most parents would be quite happy if their child’s computer gaming was limited to educational programs, the reality is that the computer games children play are primarily for pure entertainment, not for education.

Which JC is good?

Which JC to choose / Which JC is good?

Choosing a JC is a big decision that would impact the next 2 years of a student’s life. It is important not to choose a JC based on JC Cut Off Points alone. Lower JC Cut Off Points just means that JC is popular and has many people wanting to enter it, it does not mean it is better. Our tutor attended RJC, one of the top JCs in Singapore, yet he can honestly say that in terms of teaching, RJC may not be significantly better than other JCs. Most of the effort and work put in needed to ace the exams depends on the student himself, no matter which JC you attend. A suitable tutor will be helpful in clarifying doubts and teaching tips and tricks not taught in school.

The thing about elite top JCs is that they tend to teach extra material that is out of the syllabus. While this is good for general knowledge, it actually means that you are mostly on your own (rely either on self-study or tuition) to study the stuff that are actually examined in the A level syllabus, since it is less emphasized in school.

Do consider factors like the school environment, location, and your studying preferences when choosing a JC. Although Singapore is small, traveling across the island by public transport can take up to 4 hours a day (to and fro), which can be better used for study or even rest.

If you are looking for JC tuition (subjects other than Math, e.g. GP Tuition), check out this highly recommended tuition agency: StarTutor.

5 Tips on How to improve for Maths (Primary, O Level, A Level)

5 Tips on How to improve for Maths (Primary, O Level, A Level)

  1. Firstly, make sure that you do sufficient practice, especially for past year papers. Sometimes, students may think that they fully understood a topic, but there may be some gaps in their knowledge, which would be overcome by sufficient practice. Check out our site on Free Exam Papers.
  2. Improve accuracy and reduce careless mistakes. Some tips to reduce careless mistakes are double-checking, and write neatly to reduce transfer or reading error. Also, check out our article on reducing careless mistakes.
  3. Ensure adequate understanding. Ensure that each step of the question is being understood, and not relying on “guessing” or pure luck. This will enable the student to solve all similar questions of the same type. Having a good tutor, a study group of friends, or a parent knowledgeable in mathematics helps a lot.
  4. Have a positive attitude about Maths. 🙂 Liking Maths helps a lot in doing well for Maths. Treat Maths like a game or puzzle to be solved, and not as a chore. Congratulate yourself after solving a question correctly, no matter how easy or basic it is. Soon, you will be able to experience the joy of Mathematics.
  5. Finally, try to have a healthy lifestyle. Reduce harmful activities like too much computer games, as these can cause addiction and affect dopamine receptors in the brain, which hamper learning. Exercise and listening to music are good activities for soothing and relaxing the brain.
